R1234yf or R134a: read the label under the bonnet
Every car and van carries a label in the engine bay that names the refrigerant and the factory charge. That label decides which cylinder the workshop needs. Most vehicles from the last decade use R1234yf, while many older models still run on R134a. The two gases are not interchangeable and must never be mixed in one system.
R1234yf for newer vehicles
R1234yf is a single-component HFO with a GWP of 4. It replaced R134a in new vehicle platforms because EU rules for mobile air conditioning set a GWP limit of 150, and R134a sits far above that at 1,430. R1234yf is classed A2L, mildly flammable. It belongs only in systems built for it and should be handled with service equipment rated for R1234yf. We sell it in 10 kg cylinders, singly or in packs of 3, 5 and 10.
R134a for older systems
R134a remains the correct gas for vehicles that left the factory with it. It ships in 12 kg cylinders, and the same cylinders also serve commercial refrigeration customers. A conversion from R134a to R1234yf is not a simple refill: it needs the vehicle maker's approval, matching service fittings, the correct oil and recovery equipment for each gas.
Workshop practice
- Keep separate recovery and charging units for each gas, so oil and refrigerant are not cross-contaminated.
- Check the cylinder valve and any adapter against your service machine before ordering; ask us if you are unsure.
- Recover old charge before repair work and record the quantity added.
Who can order
Sales follow the same F-gas rules as stationary refrigerants. A workshop enters the certificate or training attestation that covers vehicle air conditioning work, or buys for resale as a parts distributor. In CO2e terms the difference is large: one R134a cylinder holds 17.16 t CO2e, an R1234yf cylinder 0.04 t. Delivery times and payment options are listed under delivery and payments, and the FAQ covers certificate questions in detail.
