What R1234ze is and where it is used

R1234ze is HFO-1234ze(E), a hydrofluoroolefin supplied as a single component. Its AR4 GWP is 6. Plant designers specify it mainly for chillers, heat pumps and medium temperature refrigeration where the machine has been engineered around this gas from the start.

The safety class is A2L: lower toxicity and mildly flammable. Equipment must be designed and labelled for R1234ze, and recovery units, vacuum pumps and leak detectors must be rated for A2L gases. Charge limits, machine room ventilation and ignition control follow the manufacturer's documentation and EN 378.

R1234ze under Regulation (EU) 2024/573

R1234ze is an HFO, not an HFC, so it is not counted in the HFC phase-down quota. With a GWP of 6, it sits far from the 2,500 threshold behind the servicing bans that applied to refrigeration from 2025 and to air conditioning and heat pumps from 2026. The gas is still a fluorinated gas: cylinders carry the F-gas label, and we run the same certificate check on R1234ze as on every other refrigerant we sell.

The CO2e figure is small but still worth recording. Every 10 kg of R1234ze equals 0.06 t CO2e (6 x 10 / 1000).

Replacing R134a, and related gases

R1234ze replaces R134a in new chillers and heat pumps. It is not a drop-in for an existing R134a circuit: the safety class changes from A1 to A2L, and the compressor, components and controls must be approved for R1234ze by the manufacturer. For existing R134a systems where an A1 gas with a lower GWP is wanted, look at R513A (A1, GWP 631) and confirm suitability with the equipment maker.

Ordering by quotation

R1234ze is not available through the online checkout yet. Send us the quantity and the number of cylinders through the contact page. The quotation states the cylinder size, the price ex VAT and the delivery terms. For first fills of large chillers, a multi-cylinder order is usually more practical than repeated single deliveries.

Delivery and who may buy

We ship from Fréjus, France and Riga, Latvia to all 27 EU member states. Once the quotation is accepted, delivery normally takes 1-4 working days in France and 2-6 working days elsewhere in the EU; freight shipments get a confirmed date. Cylinders are returnable to our Riga warehouse.

Buyers must be certified F-gas technicians, companies employing certified staff, or resellers. Give your basis, certificate number and issuing country under Regulation (EU) 2024/573 and Implementing Regulation (EU) 2015/2067 when you ask for the quote.

R1234ze: questions buyers ask

Can R1234ze be used as a drop-in for R134a?

No. R1234ze is A2L mildly flammable, while R134a is A1, so an existing R134a chiller or heat pump is not built for it. Only equipment designed and approved for R1234ze should be charged with it. For an existing R134a system, ask the manufacturer about approved alternatives such as R513A.

Is R1234ze affected by the F-gas quota or the 2026 servicing ban?

R1234ze is an HFO, so it is not counted in the HFC quota, and its GWP of 6 is far below the 2,500 limit used for the servicing bans. It remains a fluorinated gas, so labelling rules apply and we sell it only to certified professionals or for resale.

What is the GWP of R1234ze and how do I calculate CO2e?

The AR4 GWP of R1234ze is 6. Multiply the GWP by the charge in kg and divide by 1000. A 100 kg charge in a chiller equals 0.6 t CO2e. Keep the figure in your equipment records alongside the charged quantity.

Why is there no online price for R1234ze?

R1234ze is sold by quotation only for now. Tell us the quantity you need and the delivery country through the contact page. We reply with the cylinder size, the price excluding VAT and the delivery terms, and the order goes ahead after the usual F-gas certificate check.

Which tools do I need to work with R1234ze?

Use recovery machines, vacuum pumps, gauges and leak detectors approved for A2L refrigerants. Keep ignition sources away, ventilate the work area and follow the chiller or heat pump manufacturer's charging procedure. Charge by weight with a calibrated scale and check the safety data sheet before the job.
