What R448A is and where it is used

R448A (also written R-448A) is a zeotropic blend of five components: R32, R125, R1234yf, R134a and R1234ze(E) in a 26/26/20/21/7 mass split. The two HFO components bring its AR4 GWP down to 1387, which is about a third of the R404A figure. Its safety class is A1, so it is non-flammable under the standard classification test.

Engineers mostly meet R448A in commercial refrigeration: central supermarket racks, multi-compressor packs feeding display cases, and medium and low temperature cold stores. It is a new line in our catalogue, added for contractors who already run R448A sites or plan conversions in 2026.

2026 status under Regulation (EU) 2024/573

Since 1 January 2025, virgin refrigerants with a GWP of 2,500 or more may no longer be used to service refrigeration equipment. At 1387, R448A sits well below that line, so this servicing ban does not apply to it. It still contains HFCs, which means every kilogram placed on the EU market falls under the HFC quota, and supply can tighten as the phase-down continues.

Rules for new equipment are separate. Whether R448A is allowed in a new system depends on the equipment category, charge and application listed in the regulation, so check that before designing around it.

Replacement paths and related gases

The usual job for R448A is replacing R404A or R507 in an existing plant. It is not a drop-in. Confirm compressor approval, expansion valve capacity, oil condition and controls with the equipment maker before you recover the old charge. Never top up an R404A system with R448A or mix blends.

For similar duties, compare R449A, a four-component blend with a GWP of 1397 that many service companies use on condensing units and cold rooms. Transport units and some low temperature systems often go to R452A instead. Our refrigeration gas overview lists every commercial refrigerant we stock.

Choosing a pack size

Each cylinder holds 10 kg, equal to 13.87 t CO2e. Packs of 3, 5, 10, 15 and 20 cylinders cost less per kg than single cylinders. A single cylinder suits a top-up or a small cold room. A full rack conversion usually calls for a multi-cylinder pack, ordered once the system charge is known.

Log the t CO2e figure of each cylinder in your F-gas records together with the kilograms charged and the site.

Delivery and who may buy

Orders ship from Fréjus or Riga. Delivery takes 1-4 working days within France and 2-6 working days to the other EU countries. Empty cylinders go back to our Riga warehouse.

R448A is sold only to certified technicians, to companies that employ certified staff, or for resale. At checkout you enter your F-gas certificate number and issuing country, and we release the order after the check. Buyers in the UK can request a quotation.

R448A: questions buyers ask

Can R448A replace R404A without changing components?

Not as a straight swap. R448A is a common R404A conversion gas, but the compressor must be approved for it and the expansion valve, oil and control settings need checking. Recover the R404A charge completely, follow the equipment maker's retrofit procedure and label the system with the new refrigerant once the work is done.

What is the difference between R448A and R449A?

R448A has five components and includes R1234ze(E); R449A has four, in near-equal shares. Their GWP values are close, 1387 for R448A and 1397 for R449A, and both are A1. They are separate blends with their own pressure and temperature data, so never mix them or charge one into a system labelled for the other.

Is R448A still allowed for servicing in 2026?

Yes, for existing refrigeration systems. The EU servicing ban that started on 1 January 2025 covers virgin gases with a GWP of 2,500 or more, and R448A has a GWP of 1387. It remains under the HFC quota, so availability and price can change from year to year.

How many tonnes of CO2 equivalent is one R448A cylinder?

One 10 kg cylinder of R448A equals 13.87 t CO2e, calculated as GWP 1387 multiplied by 10 kg and divided by 1000. A 20-cylinder pack holds 200 kg, which is 277.4 t CO2e. Use these figures in your equipment records.

Who can order R448A from RefrigerationStore.eu?

Certified technicians, businesses employing certified staff, and resellers. During checkout you state your basis for buying and give the certificate number and the country that issued it. We check the details before the order is released, and EU companies with a valid VAT number are invoiced under reverse charge.
