R125 (HFC-125): a pure HFC used mainly in blends

R125 is pentafluoroethane, a single-component HFC with safety class A1 and a GWP of 3500 (AR4). Being a pure fluid, it has no temperature glide. Some of our product names still read R125A, but the correct designation of this gas is R125.

Its main role is as a building block of refrigerant blends. R125 makes up half of R410A and half of R507, and it is part of R404A, R407C, R407F, R422D, R449A and R452A. Outside blending it is also used in certain fire suppression systems. Pure R125 is rarely the design refrigerant of a comfort-cooling or commercial refrigeration system, so data for R125 should never be read as data for one of those blends: each has its own pressure, glide and GWP.

R125 in 2026 under Regulation (EU) 2024/573

R125 is not banned from sale, but its use for servicing is closed off in most cases. Article 13 prohibits virgin F-gases with a GWP of 2500 or more for maintaining or servicing refrigeration equipment from 1 January 2025. A second step applies the same threshold to air-conditioning equipment and heat pumps from 1 January 2026. With a GWP of 3500, R125 is above the line in both cases. For refrigeration, reclaimed or recycled gas remains possible only under the labelling and recovery conditions set out in Article 13.

The typical buyer of R125 is therefore a blending or formulation operation, a fire-protection company working on systems designed for this agent, or a reseller supplying those users. R125 is also an HFC inside the quota phase-down and carries a large CO2 equivalent per kilogram. The buyer stays responsible for confirming that the intended use is permitted.

What to use on systems that run on R125 blends

Never top up a blend system with pure R125, because adding one component shifts the composition and the behaviour of the circuit. R410A air conditioners and heat pumps are serviced with R410A, which stays below the 2500 threshold. For R404A refrigeration, our R404A is supplied as regenerated gas, and R449A is a lower-GWP option for existing R404A and R507 systems where the equipment manufacturer approves the change.

Single cylinder or pack, and the CO2e behind each

R125 is supplied in returnable 10 kg cylinders: one cylinder, a pack of 10 or a pack of 20, with a lower price per kg on the packs. Because of the high GWP, the CO2 equivalent adds up quickly. One cylinder is 35 t CO2e, the 10-cylinder pack is 350 t CO2e and the 20-cylinder pack is 700 t CO2e. Use these figures in your F-gas and stock records. Safety data sheets for some gases are on our documents page; for R125 we send the sheet on request if it is not listed.

Delivery and eligible buyers

R125 ships from Fréjus, France, or Riga, Latvia, to all 27 EU member states, in 1-4 working days to French addresses and 2-6 working days to the other countries. Pack orders sent on a pallet by freight get a delivery date confirmed with you. Empty cylinders come back to the Riga warehouse.

We supply R125 only to holders of an F-gas certificate under Regulation (EU) 2024/573 and Implementing Regulation (EU) 2015/2067, to companies employing certified personnel, or for resale. The checkout asks for your basis, certificate number and issuing country, and the order is released after our check. UK customers can request a quotation; there is no UK checkout.

R125: questions buyers ask

Is R125 the same as R125A?

Yes, the gas is the same. The correct ASHRAE designation is R125, also written R-125 or HFC-125, chemically pentafluoroethane. Some suppliers and some of our older product names use the label R125A, but there is no separate R125A refrigerant. Check the cylinder label and safety data sheet, which state the designation, GWP and quantity.

Can I use virgin R125 to service a refrigeration or AC system in 2026?

In the EU, generally no. Article 13 of Regulation (EU) 2024/573 bans virgin F-gases with a GWP of 2500 or more for servicing refrigeration equipment since 1 January 2025 and applies the same threshold to air conditioning and heat pumps from 1 January 2026. R125 has a GWP of 3500. Reclaimed or recycled gas is allowed only under the Article 13 conditions.

Can I add R125 to an R404A or R410A system to correct the charge?

No. Adding a single component to a blend changes its ratio and cannot restore the original composition in the field. A blend system that has lost charge through a leak should be repaired, recovered if needed and recharged with the blend on its nameplate, supplied as liquid. Pure R125 is a raw material for controlled blending, not a top-up gas.

How many tonnes CO2e is a 10 kg cylinder of R125?

At GWP 3500, a 10 kg cylinder of R125 is 35 t CO2e (3500 x 10 / 1000). The 10-cylinder pack is 350 t CO2e and the 20-cylinder pack is 700 t CO2e. Per kilogram this is a much higher figure than R410A, so plan quantities and records in tonnes CO2e.

Is R125 flammable?

No. Pure R125 is classified A1: lower toxicity and no flame propagation under standard test conditions. It is still a liquefied gas under pressure. Wear gloves and eye protection, avoid liquid contact with skin, keep cylinders upright and away from heat, and recover the gas instead of venting it. Many newer replacement gases are A2L and need equipment designed for them.
