R454B (also written R-454B) is an HFC/HFO blend of R32 and R1234yf in a 68.9/31.1 mass ratio, with an AR4 GWP of 466. Installers across Ireland, the Benelux, the Nordics and the Baltics meet it in residential split air conditioning, air-to-air and air-to-water heat pumps, and light commercial AC units and chillers. It is one of the lower-GWP gases that equipment makers use in new designs that previously would have run on R410A.
R454B is a zeotropic blend with a measurable glide. Charge it from the liquid phase and weigh every charge on a scale, following the nameplate quantity of the unit.
R454B is classified A2L, meaning lower toxicity and mild flammability. Use it only in equipment that the manufacturer designed and rated for R454B. It is not a retrofit gas for R410A systems, and it must never be mixed with R410A or added to a circuit built for an A1 refrigerant. On site, ventilate the work area, keep ignition sources away, and use recovery machines, vacuum pumps and leak detectors approved for A2L gases. Pressure test with nitrogen, and respect the charge and room-size limits in EN 378 and EN 60335-2-40.
The Article 13 servicing bans hit gases with a GWP of 2,500 or more: refrigeration equipment since 1 January 2025, air conditioning and heat pumps since 1 January 2026. At 466, R454B is far below that line, so servicing R454B units remains permitted. All the usual obligations stay in place: certified personnel, recovery instead of venting, cylinder labels showing GWP and CO2e, and service records under Article 7. Whether a new product may be placed on the market depends on its own category in Annex IV, which the equipment manufacturer must check.
For installed R410A equipment, keep servicing with R410A: its GWP is below 2,500, so the servicing ban does not apply to it. For new projects, R454B and R32 are the two common A2L routes, and the unit's design decides which one goes in. The R1234yf component also appears on its own in our R1234yf range. All air conditioning and heat pump gases are listed on the air conditioning gas page.
Each cylinder holds 10 kg of R454B, equal to 4.66 t CO2e. A single cylinder covers occasional commissioning. Packs of 3, 5, 10, 15 or 20 cylinders give 30 to 200 kg and cost less per kg than buying cylinders one at a time. Log the CO2e of what you charge, not only the kilograms.
R454B ships from our Fréjus and Riga warehouses to all 27 EU member states: 1-4 working days within France, 2-6 working days elsewhere. Pallet orders go by freight on a confirmed date. At checkout, choose your buying basis (certified technician, company employing certified staff, or resale) and give the certificate number and issuing country under Regulation (EU) 2024/573 and Implementing Regulation (EU) 2015/2067. R454B orders are released once that check is complete. Cylinders are returnable to Riga for refilling, and EU companies with a valid VAT number pay no VAT under reverse charge.
No. R454B is an A2L refrigerant and may only go into equipment that its manufacturer designed and rated for R454B. An R410A unit was built for an A1 gas, so its components, charge limits and safety measures do not cover a mildly flammable refrigerant. Keep servicing existing R410A equipment with R410A, which remains allowed for servicing in 2026.
R454B is classed A2L: lower toxicity and mildly flammable. In practice that means ventilating the work area, removing ignition sources, using A2L-approved recovery machines, vacuum pumps and leak detectors, and pressure testing with nitrogen only. Charge limits and minimum room sizes come from EN 378, EN 60335-2-40 and the equipment manufacturer's instructions.
No. From 1 January 2026, Regulation (EU) 2024/573 bans gases with a GWP of 2,500 or more for servicing air conditioning and heat pumps. R454B has a GWP of 466 under AR4, so servicing R454B equipment stays allowed. Sales remain restricted to certified technicians, companies employing certified staff and resellers, and service records are still required.
Charge R454B as liquid. It is a blend of R32 and R1234yf with a temperature glide, and taking vapour from the cylinder can shift the composition of what goes into the system. Weigh the charge on a calibrated scale against the quantity on the unit nameplate, and recover rather than vent if a circuit has to be opened.
A 10 kg cylinder of R454B equals 4.66 t CO2e (GWP 466 x 10 kg / 1000). A 3-pack is 13.98 t, a 5-pack 23.3 t, a 10-pack 46.6 t, a 15-pack 69.9 t and a 20-pack 93.2 t. Use these figures in your F-gas records alongside the kilograms charged.
