HFC blend refrigerant
R422D (R-422D) is an A1 HFC blend developed as a retrofit gas for R22 systems. With a GWP of 2,729 it falls under the EU servicing ban at GWP 2,500. It is currently out of stock; this page explains the rules and the alternatives.

R422D is a zeotropic blend of R125, R134a and R600a in proportions of 65.1 / 31.5 / 3.4 by mass. It is classed A1, non-flammable, despite the small isobutane share. It was designed as a retrofit refrigerant for R22 equipment that runs on mineral oil or alkylbenzene: split and packaged air conditioning, medium temperature cold rooms and display cases, and older condensing units. Its glide is about 5 K, so it is charged as liquid, and pressure readings use dew point for superheat and bubble point for subcooling. R422D is a different gas from R407F, and the two must not be mixed.
The AR4 GWP of R422D is 2,729, above the 2,500 threshold in Article 13. Since 1 January 2025, virgin F-gases at or above that GWP may not be used to service or maintain refrigeration equipment. From 1 January 2026, the 2,500 limit also applies to servicing air conditioning equipment and heat pumps. Article 13 sets narrow exceptions for reclaimed gas labelled under Article 12(7) and for recycled gas recovered from the same equipment.
Buying a cylinder does not make a servicing job lawful. Check the equipment category and the gas status against Article 13 before you plan any work with R422D. As an HFC, R422D also counts against the EU quota in tonnes CO2e.
For an older air conditioning system, R407C (A1, GWP 1,774) is a common R22 retrofit gas, subject to an assessment of compressor, oil and expansion device. For medium temperature commercial refrigeration, R449A (A1, GWP 1,397) is a lower-GWP option, though it does not match R422D in every system. Where the plant is due for replacement, new air conditioners and heat pumps designed for R32 are the usual route; R32 is A2L and must never go into equipment not rated for it. Any retrofit needs the equipment maker's approval and a check of seals, filters, oil and charge.
R422D is listed as a single returnable cylinder with 10 kg of gas. That cylinder equals 27.29 t CO2e (2,729 x 10 / 1000), a high figure for a small quantity and one that shows why records and leak control matter for this gas. We do not offer multi-cylinder packs of R422D.
R422D is out of stock at the moment. Use the contact page if you want to ask about availability or a lower-GWP alternative. When stock returns, it ships from Fréjus or Riga in 1-4 working days to France and 2-6 working days to other EU member states, and the empty cylinder goes back to the Riga warehouse.
Only certified F-gas technicians, companies employing certified staff and resellers can order. The checkout asks for the basis, the certificate number and the issuing country.
Not with virgin gas for ordinary servicing. R422D has a GWP of 2,729, and Regulation (EU) 2024/573 bans virgin F-gases at GWP 2,500 or more for servicing refrigeration equipment since 2025, and the same limit covers air conditioning and heat pumps from 2026. Narrow exceptions exist for reclaimed and recycled gas under Article 13.
It depends on the application. R407C is a common choice for older air conditioning, and R449A or R448A for medium temperature commercial refrigeration. None is a universal drop-in: check compressor approval, oil, seals, expansion device and charge with the equipment manufacturer before converting.
No. R422D contains about 3.4% R600a by mass but is classified A1, which means no flame propagation under the classification test. A2L handling rules do not apply to it. Follow the safety data sheet, charge as liquid and never mix R422D with R22 or other blends in the same circuit.
Using the AR4 GWP of 2,729, a 10 kg cylinder equals 27.29 t CO2e. That is more than four times the CO2e of a 9 kg R32 cylinder. Record it in your equipment log whenever the gas is charged or recovered.
We have no restock date at present. Ask through the contact page and we will reply when stock is available. Given the 2026 servicing rules, many technicians are planning the move to an alternative gas such as R407C or R449A instead of waiting for R422D.
