R410A: the R32/R125 blend in Europe's installed split systems

R410A (R-410A) is an HFC blend of 50% R32 and 50% R125. It is near-azeotropic, so its temperature glide is very small. It carries safety class A1 and a GWP of 2088 (AR4). For about two decades it was the standard charge in residential split air conditioners, multi-splits, air-to-air and air-to-water heat pumps, rooftop units and earlier VRF systems, from Ireland and the Benelux to the Nordics and the Baltics.

R410A runs at much higher pressure than R22. Gauges, hoses and recovery units must be rated for it, systems normally use POE oil, and the blend is charged from the liquid phase so its composition stays stable. It is not a drop-in for R22 equipment and must never be mixed with another refrigerant.

R410A status in 2026 under Regulation (EU) 2024/573

The servicing bans in Article 13 target gases with a GWP of 2500 or more: refrigeration equipment since 1 January 2025, air-conditioning equipment and heat pumps since 1 January 2026. At 2088, R410A sits below that threshold. It can still be used to service and repair compatible existing systems, with the usual leak checks, recovery and record keeping.

New equipment is a separate question. Annex IV restricts higher-GWP gases in several categories of new split systems, heat pumps and other products, and the threshold and date depend on the equipment type and capacity. R410A is also an HFC inside the quota phase-down, which is counted in tonnes of CO2 equivalent rather than kilograms.

Replacement paths for R410A equipment

No gas is a universal drop-in for R410A. New air conditioners and heat pumps are mostly designed for R32 or R454B. Both are A2L, mildly flammable, and belong only in equipment designed and rated for them, with matching leak detection, ventilation and ignition control. Never top up an R410A circuit with an A2L gas. For an existing R410A unit, keep servicing it with R410A and treat any change of refrigerant as an equipment decision approved by the manufacturer. Our air-conditioning gas range shows the options side by side.

Choosing a pack size

Every R410A cylinder holds 10 kg. A single cylinder covers one-off repairs and van stock. Packs of 3, 5, 10, 15 and 20 cylinders bring the cost per kg down and suit installers with several crews or a planned service season. For F-gas records, work in CO2 equivalent: one cylinder is 20.88 t CO2e, a 5-cylinder pack is 104.4 t CO2e and a 20-cylinder pack is 417.6 t CO2e.

Delivery and who may buy

Orders leave our warehouses in Fréjus, France, and Riga, Latvia, for all 27 EU member states. Delivery takes 1-4 working days in France and 2-6 working days elsewhere in the EU. Cylinders are returnable, empties are taken back at the Riga warehouse and refills are handled by our Latvian service centre. Freight and payment options are explained under delivery and payments.

R410A is sold only to holders of an F-gas certificate under Regulation (EU) 2024/573 and Implementing Regulation (EU) 2015/2067, to companies employing certified staff, or for resale. At checkout you state your basis, certificate number and issuing country, and the order is released once the check is done. UK buyers can ask for a quotation, as there is no UK checkout.

R410A: questions buyers ask

Can I still use R410A to service an existing system in 2026?

Yes, for compatible existing equipment. The Article 13 servicing bans in Regulation (EU) 2024/573 apply to gases with a GWP of 2500 or more, and R410A has a GWP of 2088. The normal duties still apply: certified personnel, leak checks, recovery of any gas removed and a record of the quantity added. Rules on placing new R410A equipment on the market are a separate matter.

Can I put R32 into an R410A unit instead?

Not as a drop-in. R32 is an A2L gas, mildly flammable, and may only be used in equipment designed and rated for it. Pressures, oil, controls and safety measures differ from R410A. Changing the refrigerant of an existing unit needs the manufacturer's approval. For a leaking R410A system, the normal route is to repair the leak and recharge with R410A.

Should R410A be charged as liquid or vapour?

Charge R410A as liquid. Its glide is very small, but it is still a blend of R32 and R125, and drawing vapour from the cylinder can shift the composition. Weigh the charge on a calibrated scale, use hoses and gauges rated for R410A pressure and check the nameplate charge before you connect.

How many tonnes CO2e is a 10 kg R410A cylinder?

With the GWP of 2088 used on this site, 10 kg of R410A equals 20.88 t CO2e (2088 x 10 / 1000). For packs, multiply by the cylinder count: 30 kg is 62.64 t, 100 kg is 208.8 t and 200 kg is 417.6 t CO2e. In each equipment log, record the amount actually charged into that system.

Who can buy R410A online in the EU?

Certified technicians, companies that employ certified staff, and buyers purchasing for resale. At checkout you choose your basis and enter the certificate number and issuing country. We check the details before the order is released. Prices are shown excluding VAT, and EU companies with a valid VAT number buy under reverse charge.
