HFC/HFO blend refrigerant

R513A Refrigerant Gas

R513A is a non-flammable A1 blend of R1234yf and R134a with a GWP of 631, used as a lower-GWP route away from R134a in medium-temperature refrigeration and chillers. We sell it in returnable 10 kg cylinders, from 10 kg up to 200 kg per order.

What R513A is and which systems use it

R513A (R-513A) is a near-azeotropic blend of 56% R1234yf and 44% R134a by mass. Its glide is very low, but it is still a blend, so charge it from the liquid phase to keep the composition stable. Safety class is A1: it is not one of the A2L gases, and A2L ignition-control procedures do not apply to it.

Typical equipment includes medium-temperature commercial refrigeration, supermarket and food-retail systems, air-cooled and water-cooled packaged chillers, process cooling, cold rooms and condensing units, beverage coolers and some precision-cooling units. In transport refrigeration it is used where the unit manufacturer approves it.

R513A status in 2026 under Regulation (EU) 2024/573

The 2025 and 2026 servicing bans apply to refrigerants with a GWP of 2500 or more. With a GWP of 631, R513A is well below that threshold and can be used in 2026 to service compatible refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat-pump equipment.

Because the blend contains R134a, it still sits inside the EU HFC quota system, and supply depends on that quota. For new equipment the answer depends on the product category and date in Annex IV: R513A fits categories whose limit is above its GWP, but it is not a long-term option for every new product type.

Converting R134a systems to R513A

The most common use of R513A is replacing R134a in existing and new systems. Treat it as an engineered retrofit, not an automatic drop-in. Before you convert, check:

  • compressor approval for R513A from the manufacturer;
  • oil and elastomer compatibility;
  • pressure switch and expansion valve settings, including electronic valves;
  • receiver size and charge limits;
  • performance at the actual evaporating and condensing temperatures.

R513A is generally not a direct substitute for R404A or R507 in low-temperature plant. For those systems look at R449A or the other options on our refrigeration gas page.

Lower-GWP options beyond R513A

Where new equipment allows it, gases with a lower GWP are taking over part of this market. R1234ze is used in chillers, but it is A2L and only goes into equipment designed for mildly flammable refrigerants. Other A1 candidates for some chillers are R450A and R515B, while R290 and R744 need equipment built around their own safety and pressure demands.

Choosing an R513A quantity

R513A comes in 10 kg returnable cylinders, sold by total weight from 10 kg to 200 kg in steps of 10, 30, 50, 100, 150 and 200 kg. A single 10 kg cylinder suits a top-up; a retrofit with recovery of the old R134a charge often needs several. The price per kg falls as the order grows. For F-gas records, 10 kg of R513A equals 6.31 t CO2e (GWP 631 x 10 kg / 1000), and 200 kg equals 126.2 t CO2e.

Shipping R513A and who may buy it

Orders leave Fréjus or Riga and reach French addresses in 1-4 working days and other EU member states in 2-6 working days; sea legs to islands are charged on top. The buyer must be a certified technician, a company employing certified staff, or a reseller, and states the certificate number and issuing country at checkout before release. R513A is listed ex VAT, with reverse charge for EU companies that hold a valid VAT number, and empty cylinders return to our Riga warehouse.

R513A: questions buyers ask

Is R513A a drop-in replacement for R134a?

Often it works in R134a systems, but not in every one. Check that the compressor is approved for R513A, that oil and seals are compatible, and adjust pressure controls and expansion valve settings where the manufacturer requires it. Recover the R134a fully before charging, and treat the change as a planned retrofit rather than a simple top-up with a different gas.

Is R513A flammable?

No. R513A has ASHRAE safety class A1, meaning lower toxicity and no flame propagation in the classification test, even though one component, R1234yf, is A2L on its own. A2L ignition-control procedures are not required for R513A. Normal precautions still apply: frostbite risk from liquid, oxygen displacement in confined spaces and keeping cylinders away from heat.

Can R513A still be used for servicing in 2026?

Yes, generally. The EU servicing bans of 2025 and 2026 cover gases with a GWP of 2500 or more, and R513A has a GWP of 631. You can therefore service compatible equipment with it. HFC quota, equipment approval, recovery duties and the rules for new equipment in Annex IV of Regulation (EU) 2024/573 still apply.

Should R513A be charged as liquid or vapour?

Charge R513A as liquid. It is a near-azeotropic blend with very low glide, but vapour charging can still shift the composition slightly. Use a cylinder position or valve that delivers liquid, meter it in carefully to protect the compressor, and weigh the charge with calibrated scales. Follow the equipment manufacturer's charging instructions where they are more specific.

How many tonnes of CO2e is a 10 kg cylinder of R513A?

A 10 kg cylinder of R513A is 6.31 t CO2e, calculated as GWP 631 x 10 kg / 1000 with the AR4 value used on our product pages. A 50 kg order is 31.55 t and a 100 kg order is 63.1 t. For each system, log the quantity actually charged rather than the cylinder total.
