R449A in commercial refrigeration

R449A, also listed as R-449A, blends four components in almost equal parts by mass: R32 24.3%, R125 24.7%, R1234yf 25.3% and R134a 25.7%. It has an AR4 GWP of 1397, zero ozone depletion potential and an A1 safety class.

Service engineers use it in the equipment that once ran on R404A or R507: condensing units, walk-in cold rooms at medium and low temperature, refrigerated display cases, food processing plants and refrigerated warehouses. Semi-hermetic reciprocating and scroll compressors are the typical machines.

Retrofit checklist for R404A and R507 systems

R449A is a frequent retrofit choice, yet no conversion should start without checks. Before recovering the old charge, go through these points:

  • Compressor approval for R449A and its operating envelope.
  • Expansion valve capacity and setting.
  • Oil condition; R449A generally runs with POE oil.
  • Discharge temperature, pressure limits and control set points.
  • Filter drier replacement where the procedure asks for it.

Charge R449A from the cylinder in the liquid phase. Its temperature glide is about 4 K, so read superheat against the dew point and subcooling against the bubble point. Label the converted system clearly and never mix R449A with R404A, R507 or another blend.

What the F-gas Regulation means for R449A in 2026

Regulation (EU) 2024/573 bans virgin gases with a GWP of 2,500 or above for refrigeration servicing from 1 January 2025. R449A, at 1397, is outside that ban and can be used to service existing systems. Because it contains HFCs, it still counts against the EU HFC quota, which keeps shrinking. Restrictions on new equipment depend on the category of product, so confirm the rule for your application before specifying R449A in a new build.

Alternatives to compare

If you are moving away from R404A, which we supply as regenerated gas, R449A is one of several routes. R448A is a five-component blend with a GWP of 1387, found mostly on supermarket racks. R452A is common in transport refrigeration. These blends are not interchangeable without an engineering review.

Pack sizes and F-gas records

One 10 kg cylinder of R449A equals 13.97 t CO2e. Packs of 3, 5, 10, 15 and 20 cylinders bring the price per kg down. Pick the pack from the system charge you need, plus a margin for leak repairs. Enter the kilograms and the t CO2e in the equipment log.

Ordering and delivery

Only certified technicians, companies with certified staff, and resellers can buy. Give your certificate number and issuing country at checkout. Cylinders leave Fréjus or Riga and arrive in 1-4 working days in France or 2-6 working days in the rest of the EU. See delivery and payments for freight and invoice options.

R449A: questions buyers ask

Is R449A a drop-in replacement for R404A?

No. R449A is often chosen to retrofit R404A plant, but each system needs its own assessment: compressor approval, expansion valve capacity, operating pressures, discharge temperature, oil condition and controls. After recovering the R404A, charge R449A as liquid, adjust settings for the roughly 4 K glide and label the system with the new gas.

Which oil does R449A need?

R449A is generally used with POE oil. Systems that already ran R404A or R507 on POE often keep the same oil type, but check its condition and follow the compressor maker's instructions. If the compressor documentation calls for an oil change or filter drier replacement during the retrofit, do it before charging.

Can I still buy and use R449A in the EU in 2026?

Yes. R449A has a GWP of 1397, below the 2,500 threshold of the EU refrigeration servicing ban in force since 2025, so it can be used to service existing equipment. It is still subject to the HFC quota, and sales are limited to certified professionals, companies with certified staff and resellers.

How do I calculate CO2 equivalent for an R449A charge?

Multiply the kilograms by the GWP of 1397 and divide by 1000. A 10 kg cylinder gives 13.97 t CO2e, a 50 kg pack 69.85 t CO2e and a 200 kg pack 279.4 t CO2e. Record the result for each system charge in the equipment log alongside the date and the site.

Should R449A be charged as liquid or vapour?

As liquid. R449A is a zeotropic blend with about 4 K of glide, and drawing vapour from the cylinder would shift the composition of what goes into the system. Use a calibrated scale and take superheat and subcooling readings against the dew and bubble points.
